Pain is an unpleasant mental and physical experience that is typically brought on by tissue injury. It enables the body to respond to additional tissue damage and stop it from happening again. When a signal passes via nerve fibers and is interpreted by the brain, people experience pain. Everybody experiences pain differently, and there are many different ways to feel and express pain. In certain situations, this diversity may make it difficult to identify and manage pain. Both short-term and long-term pain can be localized or dispersed throughout the body. When certain nerves known as nociceptors identify tissue damage and send information about it to the brain via the spinal cord, people experience pain.
